Hematology
Hematology deals with investigation, diagnosis, and treatment as well as prevention of disorders related to the lymphatic and blood system. The science of hematology focuses upon the unwanted/unfavorable irregularities present in the blood cells, blood platelets, blood proteins, blood vessels and haemoglobin count. It investigates the functioning of blood producing organs such as the spleen and bone marrow.

Some of the common disorders that you may have to consult a hematologist for are:

Anemia
If you have anemia, it means your body has a deficiency of healthy red blood cells or RBC. This deficiency indicates that the required amount of oxygen and nutrition does not reach the cells of your body. Anemia is sometimes caused due to dysfunctional RBCs. The remedy can be non-invasive as well as invasive. The non-invasive method includes medication with iron supplements, including Vitamin B. In cases of heavy blood loss, blood transfusion is suggested.
Leukemia
Leukemia or blood cancer occurs when the body’s lymphatic system grows malignant tissue. The cancerous tissue hinders the body’s capacity to control infection. Bone marrow too might be affected. Leukemia types are:
- Acute myeloid leukemia
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
In case the leukemia spreads slowly, then constant monitoring of the patient is done. If it spreads rapidly, then chemotherapy is prescribed. Sometimes, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant and chemotherapy may be recommended.

Haemophilia
It is a blood clotting disorder where the blood does not clot as it should do. Any little injury or bruise leads to heavy bleeding. Treatment for haemophilia is usually of two types:
Preventive: Injections with the clotting factor are given to contain short durational bleeding which might include muscle damage.
On demand: Recommended when there is a prolonged bleeding history.

Myelofibrosis
This is a rare form of cancer affecting the bone marrow that disrupts the production of blood cells in healthy and normal conditions. It can lead to severe anemia, as the bone marrow becomes very damaged. You may experience extreme weakness and fatigue. As the spleen is one of the sources for production of blood, enlarged spleen can hinder this function. Targeted drugs would be prescribed.
Indian hospitals and clinics are adequately equipped with the latest technology and experienced healthcare providers to diagnose and treat this cancer.
Some tests, treatments and services offered by our hospitals are:
- Blood sample analysis
- Prescribing of immunosuppressive medication
- Blood bank supervision
- Determining the reason for blood disorders
- Removal or addition of the blood components
- Bone marrow transplant and blood transfusion
